Breakouts can manifest as lesions, papules, blackheads, pimples, and nodules. Dermatologists categorize acne types as either inflammatory or non-inflammatory. The latter, as its name implies, does not cause pain or swelling.

Types of Acne: Non-Inflammatory vs. Inflammatory

Comedones are an example of non-inflammatory acne. These clogged follicles are often foundon the nose, forehead, and chin. Closed comedones are known as whiteheads and look like small skin-colored bumps protrudingfrom the skin. A whitehead's pore is completely clogged and sealed, unlike that of a blackhead, which is partially open but congested with sebum and dead skin cells. The characteristic blackcolor is a result of an oxidized sebum plug and melanin.Whiteheads and blackheads are some of the most common forms of mild acne, but the goodnews is there are topical actives that help exfoliate and unclog pores.

Inflammatory Acne Types

Inflammatory acne, depending on the severity, can lead to pitting or scarring, especially if thelesions are routinely picked at.

When the tissue around follicles is severely inflamed, and the pores are clogged, this results inan acne papule. It is tender to the touch, swollen and pink around the edges. Papules can occuranywhere on the face and body, including the neck, shoulders, back, chest, and buttocks.

Pustules are swollen acne lesions that contain pus-- the body's reaction to a bacterial infection.Pustules are characterized by a bulging reddish bump with a white or yellowish center. It isusually painful and commonly occurs on oily parts of the face and the back, shoulders, andneck.

Cysts are one of the most severe types of acne and are caused by bacterial infections deepunder the skin that can spread if the lesion is burst. Cystic acne can be chronic and cause pusand keratin-filled lumps that are sore to the touch. It usually develop on the face, neck, shoulders, back, and arms and may cause scars or pitting.

Like cysts, nodules are a more severe form of acne that develops within your skin's deeperlayers. Acne nodules are firm, painful bumps that cannot and should not be popped. In somepeople, acne nodules can develop alongside cysts in a condition known as nodulocystic acne. This severe acne type tends to form around the lower face and jawline, and breakouts can takemonths to disappear.

Treatments for Different Types of Acne

As you probably know, acne isn’t the easiest to treat. Perhaps you have tried a ton of different treatments in the past with nothing to show for it. However, now that you know more about the different types of acne, you can focus on finding the right treatment for your unique skin struggles.

Here are some recommended treatments for different types of acne:

Although it may be tempting to pop your whiteheads to get rid of the bump, this is definitely not the best approach. For starters, you could be further irritating and clogging the area with the bacteria, dirt, and oil on your hands. Even worse, you could be causing scarring to the skin. As a result, you should focus on treating your whiteheads with topical over-the-counter products that contain anti-acne ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, gentle exfoliants, and retinoids.

Once again, it’s really tempting to squeeze or pick at your blackheads to remove that pesky black dot in the pore. However, blackheads are best treated with a hands-off approach similar to the one prescribed for whiteheads. Perhaps the best treatment for blackheads is regular exfoliation. Whether you choose chemical or physical exfoliation, make sure that the method is gentle enough to perform on a regular basis. For example, chemically exfoliating ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids can remove blackheads from the surface of the skin. Clay or charcoal masks can also suck out the clogged materials in the pore and remove the blackhead.

Since papules are an inflammatory type of acne, it’s important to treat the skin with care to avoid further inflammation. As a result, avoid unnecessarily touching the area or using extra skincare products. To treat papules, look for anti-acne ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Retinoid creams may also help with these blemishes. Antibiotics may be recommended by your dermatologist to treat the bacteria causing the blemish.

Like papules, pustules should be treated with care and not irritated through unnecessary actions and products within your skincare routine. It could be very damaging to your skin to attempt to drain or pop the pus in the center of the pustule. In this case, patience is key through a consistent skincare routine that involves cleansing with a salicylic acid cleanser. Ingredients like sulfur or even prescription antibiotics may also be helpful for treating stubborn pustules.

Acne nodules go well beneath the surface of the skin and generally cannot be reached by over-the-counter topical treatments that just sit on the surface of the skin. As a result, you may need prescription acne medications from a dermatologist. For example, there are prescription-strength salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide products out there that are stronger than the over-the-counter varieties and can penetrate deep into the skin to reach your acne nodules. Other potential treatments include antibiotics and retinoids.

Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne that cannot be treated through over-the-counter topical products since it occurs deep within the skin. As a result, it’s recommended that you speak with a dermatologist about your acne concerns. They will likely prescribe a medication like isotretinoin, spironolactone, oral antibiotics, topical retinoids, or even oral contraceptives to treat your cystic acne.
