It happens to the best of us – that moment in your late 20s when you notice something unexpected staring back at you from the bathroom mirror: deep wrinkles between the eyebrows, under-eye wrinkles, and crow’s feet.
It happens to the best of us – that moment in your late 20s when you notice something unexpected staring back at you from the bathroom mirror: deep wrinkles between the eyebrows, under-eye wrinkles, and crow’s feet.
We all get wrinkles as we age, but it is the eye area where they typically crop up first. In addition to simple genetics, sun damage, poor diet, and even allergies can make the problem worse.
Although we may not be able to completely avoid under-eye area wrinkles as we get older, you can help prevent and treat the appearance of under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet with a tailored anti-aging skincare routine from PROVEN Skincare.
The eye area is uniquely prone to signs of early aging. For starters, the skin around the eye area is about 40% thinner than anywhere else on your face and body, and the many blood vessels found around the eyes shrink causing more wrinkles. In addition, the skin surrounding your eyes is more susceptible to sun damage, pollution, and oxidative stress – all of which promote skin aging.
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation is particularly damaging, according to dermatologists. UV rays break down collagen – the main protein in your skin tissue that keeps your facial structure intact. Another major cause of under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet is smoking. Smoking constricts the blood vessels in your face, blocking circulation, and depriving your skin of much-needed Vitamin A.
Frequent facial expressions such as squinting and facial habits such as rubbing itchy eyes can contribute to the problem as the skin around the eye becomes less flexible as we age. Even the way you sleep at night, especially if you sleep on your stomach with your face planted in your pillow, can promote eye wrinkles and crow’s feet.
Even with all of the above, don’t be discouraged -- there are many ways you can improve the look of under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet before heading to a dermatologist.
The best place to start improving under-eye wrinkles is to buy a good retinol-based eye cream. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that stimulates collagen production. Other beneficial anti-aging ingredients include Vitamin C, peptides, niacinamide, and alpha hydroxy acids. If used regularly, they will both firm and smooth the skin under and around your eyes.
Some experts argue that using a quality eye cream is not enough to beat back the effects of aging and recommend using an overall moisturizer to promote hydration. When you take PROVEN Skincare’s skincare quiz, you are given a customized formula with a facial cleanser, moisturizer, and night cream to cover all of your skincare bases with three effective products.
After applying a rich eye cream, seal it in with a touch of natural oil such as argan, marula or sunflower oil. Argan oil and marula oil are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that help strengthen skin tissue while sunflower oil enhances the development of new skin cells.
Whenever you go outside, make sure to wear at least a 30 SPF sunscreen along with a pair of sunglasses and a rimmed hat. We all want to have a healthy glow, but remember that sun exposure is a major cause of skin damage. PROVEN has you totally covered with this step by including SPF 40 in your personalized moisturizer.
Allergies cause inflamed and itchy eyes that you may be tempted to rub. Rubbing or tugging at the skin in the eye area can promote wrinkles. When your eyes are puffy from allergens in the air, it pushes blood vessels under the eyes closer to the surface. This makes dark circles look even worse. Seeking the help of a qualified allergist can make a huge difference not only in the overall quality of your life, but also in the appearance of the skin surrounding your eyes.
Facial massages stimulate blood flow, reduce puffiness, and can truly help improve overall skin quality. Consider trying a gentle acupressure massage or gua sha. Gua sha is an ancient Chinese healing technique that involves moving a flat stone usually made of green jade across different parts of your face to help promote lymphatic drainage. Gua sha (pronounced gwah-shah) usually starts by lightly pressing a flat piece of jade under your eye, from the inner corner to the outer corner, then moving the stone up to your temple, and then down the neck stopping just above the collar bone.
There are many serum-infused sheet masks now on the market that allow deeper penetration of their ingredients, including hyaluronic acid and ceramides, directly into the skin which promotes plumpness and smoothness.
A consistent diet packed with antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and collagen-producing foods such as bone broth can not only improve your overall health, but also the youthfulness of your skin.
Drink water and lots of it. People who drink water consistently throughout the day are less likely to suffer from eye area wrinkles and soft lines than those who do not. Dehydrated skin is a temporary problem that is different from those who suffer from chronic dry skin. If you are struggling with dull flaky skin, dark circles, dry itchy patches of skin, or noticeable fine lines and wrinkles, you may be suffering from dehydration.
If you want to improve the wrinkles around your eyes, it is best to avoid large quantities of caffeine which is a diuretic that works to deplete your body’s water content. If you are a passionate coffee drinker, however, don’t be discouraged. Most experts say having one or two cups of coffee per day is perfectly acceptable.
Don’t forget to remove your makeup at night. It can sometimes be hard to drag yourself into the bathroom before bed to wash your makeup off after a hard day at work. Unfortunately, the same makeup that made you look presentable at the office can clog your pores, lead to inflammation, and leave your skin feeling dehydrated the next day. To make matters worse, leaving your makeup on overnight can prevent any special anti-aging products you put on at night from working effectively. So be sure to wash your face before applying any night creams or moisturizers.
Remember to use your ring finger whenever you are applying any makeup, especially in the eye area. Using your ring finger puts the least amount of pressure and pull on your under-eye skin.
Smoking triggers the release of free radicals throughout your body and accelerates facial wrinkles by constricting blood vessels.
Much like caffeinated drinks, alcohol is a diuretic and too much of it can lead to inflammation and dehydration which causes facial wrinkles.
If home remedies still don’t satisfy your concerns about under-eye wrinkles or crow’s feet, your local dermatologist has a wide assortment of options to make you feel confident and youthful again. Remember that some options will require more than one treatment and that the effects of treatments can range depending on the option you choose.
Chemical peels are a good choice for people who have under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet. A chemical solution is used to deeply exfoliate the skin, causing the top dermal layer to peel off. This treatment does not work for all skin tones and is only recommended for people with lighter skin tones.
Hyaluronic fillers such as Restylane can fill in both under-eye wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes and the results are known to last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of dermal filler used. However, you should be aware that there can be some side effects to the treatment such as swelling, bruising, and itching at the injection site.
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment that involves the use of a special tool to spray microcrystals into the skin to peel away the outer layers. It will noticeably reduce the appearance of fine lines and crow’s feet as well as dark circles and bags under the eyes.
Laser treatments are an increasingly popular option for getting rid of under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet. Most of these treatments involve poking microscopic holes into the skin using carbon dioxide lasers that stimulate both collagen and elastin production. The one-and-done process usually takes about 30 minutes which makes it an extremely popular dermatology option.
Botox treatments involve the injection of a very small amount of purified botulinum toxin into targeted muscles in the delicate skin around the eyes. Doing so causes the area to temporarily relax and, as a result, diminishes the appearance of wrinkles. Botox treatments typically last four to six months.
In conclusion, there are plenty of ways to fix those pesky under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet that make you feel older than you are. The answer can be something as simple as improving your overall skin regimen with customized products from PROVEN or making a commitment to change some unhealthy personal habits.
