Blotchy Skin? Science may have a solution. Read on to learn all about red spots.
With the exception of blush, redness on the face is rarely desirable. Furthermore, ridding your skin of unwanted red areas can be frustrating and slow to produce results. Since there are so many potential causes of red spots on the face, your quest to banish them may need to begin with a visit to a dermatologist. In rare cases, reddened areas may indicate a serious medical condition, such as lupus. In other instances, the redness is caused by relatively harmless skin conditions that may still warrant professional treatment. Unless your redness is temporary and quickly resolved with over-the- counter products, you may need a dermatologist’s help to figure out what’s causing it.
One of the most common reasons for red blotches on face areas is skin irritation. Your skin maybecome irritated if you are sensitive to a new product you’ve started using. You may even besensitive to certain laundry detergents. For instance, if you’ve been wearing a scarf, you mightwant to launder it with hypoallergenic detergent.
Other possible causes of reddened areas on the face can include the following:
A cherry angioma, often called a “red mole,” is a benign growth--bright red and either circular or oval. They are often raised but can also be flat. Althoughthey are harmless, they can be aesthetically troubling, and they may bleed if scratchedor cut. Unfortunately, there are no over-the-counter remedies. Cherry angiomas thatcause concern will require professional removal by a doctor.
Rosacea is a common skin disorder that results in widespread redness on theface with blood vessels visible beneath the skin. Some people also develop small redspots that are filled with pus. It can be easy to mistake these red spots for acne.
If you develop an allergic reaction to a medication, you may have hives on the face. Hives typically look red or flesh-colored. These raisedwelts are often quite itchy.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain and inflammation. Onetelltale sign of lupus is the characteristic “butterfly” red rash that extends across bothcheeks and the nose.
Shingles is a viral infection resulting in a painful rash of red, raised blisters.Although the rash typically appears on the trunk, it can also develop on one side of theface, usually around the eye.
Also known as eczema, this red rash can appear out of nowhere and lead to extremely itchy, dry, and scaly skin in the affected area.
This is the name of whenever your skin comes into contact with a foregin substance that causes a reaction. As a result of this interaction a rash develops that might be red, itchy, or inflamed.
This common skin condition can cause the formation of tiny red, white, or flesh colored bumps. These bumps are typically painless, but the surrounding skin may feel pretty rough and dry.
These tiny bumps will often appear as purple, red, or brown spots on the skin. While it may have a similar appearance to a rash, petechiae is actually the result of bleeding underneath the skin. If you press on a rash then it will turn pale and white, but pressing on petechiae will create no difference in coloration.
This condition will cause your body to manufacture skin cells too rapidly, cutting the process from weeks to day. As a result, the cells will pile up on the surface on your skin and create raised and scaly red spots.
This common skin condition will typically cause a red rash that makes the skin appear oily, scaly, and dry.
Failure to adequately protect your skin from the harmful radiation of the skin can result in spider veins developing. This damage will take several years to accumulate before becoming prominently visible.
The additional symptoms that you can expect will depend on what condition, disorder, or disease caused the red spots to appear in the first place.
However, some of the more common ones, that are seen through most of the causes listed above, include:
In many cases, reddened areas on the skin are benign, albeit a nuisance. Sometimes, however, they require medical attention. If you’re experiencing redness along with other symptoms, it’sbest to err on the side of caution and seek medical care. For example, the rash associated withmeningitis appears as a cluster of red dots on the face and body areas. It is accompanied by afever, headache, and neck pain, and stiffness. It requires urgent medical care, as it is life-threatening.If your symptoms are persistent, troublesome, or do not respond to over-the-countertreatments, consider seeing a doctor. In addition, it’s a good idea to seek a medical evaluation ifa red area suddenly changes in size or appearance. For example, you should have a doctor takea look at a cherry angioma that has begun evolving in appearance.
The recommended treatment for red dots on face areas depends on the underlying cause ofthe problem. Since redness is often the result of skin irritation, you could start by eliminatingproducts from your skincare routine that contain fragrances, phthalates, sulfates, alcohol, andparabens. Instead, look for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products-- preferably those thatcontain soothing ingredients like aloe vera.
Also, if your skin is sensitive, you should avoid harsh scrubs intended to exfoliate the skin. Thesewill only irritate it further. On the other hand, if your redness is caused by acne rather thansensitivity, it’s desirable to promote skin cell turnover. Consider using products with salicylicacid or glycolic acid to support the removal of the top layer of skin.
If you aren’t quite sure what’s causing your facial redness, it’s never a bad idea to add calmingingredients to your skincare routine. Rose oil, aloe vera, oatmeal, and niacinamide (a form ofvitamin B3) can help calm down redness. In addition, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptidesare ingredients that support a healthy skin barrier.
If you did visit a dermatologist to identify the root cause of your redness, be sure to follow thedoctor’s recommendations. For example, if the cause is rosacea, you should identify yoursymptom triggers by keeping a journal. You may discover that spicy foods, stress, alcohol, orextreme cold or heat are responsible.
In most cases, red dots on the skin won’t be harmful. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t see a doctor about potential treatments. Depending on the cause, there may be antibiotics or other medications that can eliminate the dots once and for all.
For others, there are a few ways to effectively manage and relieve some of the symptoms at home. Some of these tips include:
When looking for potential products to help treat the affected area, looking for products that contain:
